Work-Life Balance: The Secret

A man walking on a tightrope

Why Do We Lose It?

Life is all about arriving at a balance.

Basically, between excesses.

And we miss the balance because of misplaced priorities.

One of my friends recently suffered a heart attack.

He shared with me later that he was so trapped in his hectic office routine that he could barely find time for a walk or even a coffee break.

And whenever he did manage, he was overcome by a huge feeling of guilt.

As if he was committing a crime.

Doing something for himself was just unthinkable for him.

It was almost unholy.

Going to bed late, smoking non-stop, living with a mobile all the time and stressed out even in his dreams!

That was his life.

Then one day, around 4 in the morning, he heard a loud knock at his door.

Who could be this?

He got up and hit the floor like a stone.

There was nobody at the door.

It was his own heart pumping furiously against his ribs.

Next, he found himself inside an ICU with scores of plastic tubes jutting in and out of his body.

Finally, he was taking the rest his consumed body deserved so well.

Is it Your Situation too?

Tell me frankly.

Isn’t it your story too?

Where are your relationships heading?

Are you in good health?

When you get up in the morning, how do you feel?

Joyful, ready to embrace the day ?

Or is it ‘Can I avoid the world today?’ kind of feeling.

The sun is not that bright.

The breeze is not that cool.

Even the water tastes bitter.

And everything is horribly wrong with the world and people around.

Right?

The Key

What all this means is that you have lost the ‘best fit’ in your life.

We have all seen the tightrope walker.

When he tilts to one side, he is actually avoiding falling onto the other.

This is how he maintains his equilibrium.

And we got to follow his example.

Too much socialization?

Be alone for sometime.

If you start missing the crowd, you can go back again.

Too much eating and stuffing?

Observe a fast for a day or two.

Too much mental chaos?

Be silent and meditate.

And by all means, go back to chaos if you so desire.

Too much work?

Embrace life.

Try music, dance, family time or traveling.

In short, whatever nourishes you.

Then, come back to work, ready and rejuvenated.

So, tilt to the opposite side if you feel you are bending over to the other.

Practice it daily.

In fact, every single moment.

Be aware.

Don’t sleepwalk.

Wake up and achieve your balance.

Wake up and live.

The Secret

Gradually, you would learn to be at the third point.

Neither to the left nor to the right.

Just in the center.

And that's when you feel liberated.

The burden lifts off your shoulders.

You are no longer unsteady.

You are neither angry nor frustrated.

You have discovered something wholesome.

You are now in harmony with yourself.

Yes, you have regained your balance.

You have finally arrived.

The Third Point is the secret!

    1. Yes Shalini, good observation. I agree that we often overlook the significance of attaining balance in life. It's like a bird flying in the skies. His flight is perfect when his two wings are in balance.

The intensity to read these beautifully crafted articles and short stories is more as compared to the curiosity to read. Your every article or simply a short story is implicitly a complete balance itself to provide some lifelong everlasting lesson. Really a wonderful explanation of balance....which can be applied to our action, words, feelings and emotions...

  6. A lot of us focus on the results of our work than the work itself. If each one of us make our journey more pleasurable rather than the fruits; being in balance would come naturally to us. Good read, Manish. Thanks for sharing!
